transfer case recommended for 2007 X3i manual transmission

My wife's ride shows classic signs of transfer case issues. Dealership recommends replacement of transfer case. Our research (we are NOT gear heads) indicates that the problem could be the transfer case motor or the actuator gear in the motor. Each of which would cost considerably less than replacing the entire transfer case. Anyone have experience with differentiating this and/or advice?

Thanks,

Vic

dealerships will almost always 'replace' parts that they believe are broken; a good independent shop will usually come up with a 'fix' which is a huge difference sometimes. you should definitely get a 2nd opinion

Thanks Paul - actually we did and although some price difference there was a difference in the part (refurbished vs new) and warranty (1yr, 12k miles vs 2yrs unlimited miles). BTW, what's the difference between a junior member and senior member?

Thx,

Vic
