    03/17/2012 - DIY @ Chapman Auto Werks

    Do It Yourself (DIY) Program Overview
    The 2012 Do It Yourself (DIY) program allows National Capital Chapter (NCC) BMW Car Club of America (CCA) Members to work on their own cars under the supervision of expert mechanics and technicians provided by the DIY Sponsor. The purpose of the DIY is to learn and practice proper maintenance and repair techniques that you can routinely complete within a two-and-one-half-hour (2.5 hour) time period.

    There are typically several NCC members who can assist you when an extra pair of hands or advice is needed. We are happy to show newcomers the joys of working on your own car. Most events start at between 8 am and 9 am and typically finish at 3 pm. Lunch for the event is provided by the club.

    It looks as if I'm going to have to replace the center support bearing on the driveshaft of my 1996 328i. I"ve reviewed the DIY procedure on Pelican and it sure looks like something I could do in a morning at one of these DIY sessions. Does this sound like a fair assumption?

    It's relatively simple if you can get the mid-pipe off (which you'll need to do to get access). The problem is that you most likely will break the header studs unless they are not corroded. Replacing the header studs is a PITA and requires some finesse with a big hammer. I'm not sure of your mechanical ability, but the project could be seen as easy by some people and very difficult by others.
