Great Pie Run - Spring Thaw
28 May 2016
Start 0700hrs
#1 FAQ: Do I have to register? It would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Imagine trying to plan an event and having more people show than you have space and food. That is the same issue we deal with when planning events. The venue needs to know how many people to plan for as so they can have enough staff and space available.
We will begin at Scandanavian Import Servicecenter in Rockville, MD at 7:00am with some light breakfast fare and a tour of their facility. Then on to Catoctin Moutain Orchard in Thurmont, MD and lunch in Frederick, MD at a.k.a. Friscos. As usual, we will be taking all backroads through the countryside of Montgomery, Frederick, and Washington counties, and perhaps slightly into Pennsylvania.
A little history of Scandanavian Import Servicecenter, from Bogdan Poplacean: From our beginning in 1975, we exclusively serviced and sold Saabs and Volvos until welcoming MINI to our family of special cars in 2010 and BMW in 2013. Scandinavian was founded by a dealership mechanic on the belief that both the owners of specialized European cars and those who work to service them were yearning for an alternative to the traditional dealership. New car dealers and others calling themselves specialists have come and gone, but we remain above the crowd of instant experts as the oldest and largest independent Saab and Volvo sales and service facility in metropolitan Washington.
Catoctin Mountain Orchard Thurmont, Va . www.catoctinmountainorchard.com We have been here so many times do I really need to repeat myself. A few of us have been known to leave CMO w/ 12+ pies. CMO is a mom & pop operation specializing in homemade pies, either baked or frozen. They also have fresh fruits, preserves, jams, jellies, dressings and cider, etc....
Note: I highly recommend ordering your pies ahead of time since we are a large group. Ordering ahead will help us get underway on time. The pies can be ordered fresh baked or frozen. Some people do bring a cooler with them to keep their pies from sliding around in the trunk, especially since we have fun driving to do. When you place your order, reference the "BMW group". The pies range in price from $8.95-$11.95. Check their site for the different types of pie.
IMPORTANT: The deadline for calling or emailing in orders for pies is Friday, 27 May. Popular pies: Apple Walnut, Strawberry, Cherry Crumb, Peach, Peach Blueberry, Blueberry, Four Berry.
Next stop,a.k.a. Friscos, in Frederick, MD. http://akafriscos.com/. They are a restaurant serving a large variety of excellent sandwiches, salads and exploaded potatoes that are homemade and served in big portions. Speaking from experience, the exploded potatoes are amazing! They are located in a non-descript building in a business park, so the restaurant is easy to overlook.
A little bit about their name from the website: aka Friscos is really a play on words. We wanted a name that referenced San Francisco but would be familiar to someone in DC. The story goes like this. If you live in San Francisco you normally would refer to it as “the city” or simply San Francisco. What you would not call it is “Frisco”. That reference was left to tourist and someone that really didn’t live there. East Coast visitors were notorious users of “Frisco”. We thought it was kind of funny to name it aka (also known as) Friscos and start one in an East Coast city. It worked. We’ve told this story hundreds of times.
