I apologize if it was said earlier but VAC Motorsports offers a Competition Oil Pump for (what I think is) a very reasonable price.
$299+ $200 Core charge

Never seen that before, but unfortunatly the budget was blown due to new pistons being needed.
Also I don't know of many people who have had any great luck with VAC products

Looks like a really cool project. How much will it cost to rebuild your engine and about how many hours/days of your time does it take?

Double what I originally thought. The biggest expenses were the machine shop and pistons, and the down time waiting for the pistons and machine work. Next time around I could trim off some time with better planning. Parts just come down to good sourcing and not cutting corners. Those timing chain guides are cheap and easy to replace now. Later would be a nightmare.
There's a whole thread over at bimmerforums.com which gets a bit deeper.

Here are some of the ballpark expenses:
Pistons & rings $1200 (6 weeks for aftermarket, made to order)
Machine shop $1200 (2-4 weeks depending upon the shop's level of business)
Misc parts & gasket kits $400-500
Head gasket (they come in 2 sizes) $80
Head studs $225 (3 days)
New oil pump $300
ATI custom damper $700 (60-90 days to manufacture) (BMW damper $550)
Aftermarket FI cams $1200 (were back ordered for 3 months)

Got the head on, and cam gears in the new cams. Unfortunatly a new $0.73 bolt that goes through the head, into the timing cover, is too long. Bummer...

Picked up the new damper from ATI, and does feel lighter than OEM. Here a couple quick pics.
