Why are so many E24 M6 always for sale ?

I am curious why is seems that a number of E24 M6s are always for sale ?
I would guess that most owners can turn a wrench themselves. The cars are not likely treated as daily drivers.

Close to $10K for an engine overhaul (same story for E28 M5), and interior bits are becoming hard to get affordably.

I can recall the plug wire set for an e28 M being around $900, 10 years ago!, I would offend the purists and drop an ls7 in there for $6k.

Needs a blower on it too. No excuses. Just do it.

    Spark plug wiring set $261

What would be a good car to compar pricing to ?
Rotors, coil, water pump, fuel pump all look to be 50% more than a 88 420SEL.
Not that I am worring but how many miles should I get out of the engine with regular maintenance ? Is their something that goes Ka-Boom at 150K ?

    Bingo,
Check pricing with Steve at http://www.blunttech.com/ - great service along with pricing.
Are you referring to comparing the price of parts or "similar" cars, such as a mid-80s M-B coupe or Porsche?
Depending on what has been done in the way of upkeep, there are things to address at 100-120K miles (i.e., timing chain tensioners). These are good questions to ask at or search prior threads at http://www.mye28.com/viewforum.php?f...f72f0a02014b66 - many similarities to the M5, and there are owners of both there!

    John,

Thanks ! great pricing. I will go through the PO's receipts on the timing chain and tensioners.
I will post a couple of questions on the MYE528 forum

    John,

Decided to replace the voltage regulator since I can't tell how old the current one is and if it's original then it's not going to allow the alternator to recharge the battery completely. Anyways Autozone had them for 119.99, BMW had them for 134. and blunttech had them for $23 + shipping.

    Jim,
Glad you were able to find reasonable pricing! I replaced a failed VR in the E30 after 22 years (brushes were almost gone) and threw one in the E28 at the same time as preventative maintenance.
