Instant on and laser have made them almost obsolete, they tell you you've just been recorded, unless it picks up "spatter"from a neighboring car thats been hit..

few jurisdictions have laser (especially in MD) and the vast majority use guns with old technology. I've had a V1 for almost 10 years and no tickets; plus, i've downloaded speed cameras/speed traps to my nav as a good backup.

only downside to my v1 other than the lack of laser detection (and no one can claim this as anywhere close to 100%) is you can't screen out false alarms and/or known places that have devices to set it off (malls/stores with electric doors, banks, etc).

OP - where do you live? are you looking at only a detector and not jammers?

I used to use the Valentine V1 (until it was stolen out of my car) -- I did get a ticket with laser, and yes the V1 did very helpfully let me know that I was getting a ticket. The V1 has "directional" antennas, so you can tell if the signal is ahead or behind (or both).

When I replaced the V1, I got the Escort (I forget the model, the top line model). It has a GPS, as well as laser, etc. It works very well for the photo cameras, it picks those up very well. Also picks up the photo cameras around Montgomery county. With the GPS, you can load from the internet the locations of known speed traps, red light cameras, and speed cameras. You can also custom program locations for either known speed traps or false alarms, its actually pretty good at learning the locations where there are false alarms (like those "you're going XX MPH signs).

All in all, you can't go wrong with the V1, but I do like the GPS and other features of the Escort better -- if I were in the market today, I'd get the Escort product. V1 used to be better, but I think they have been resting on their laurels and haven't updated the product with the GPS technology.

true, and i've been waiting for them to update that. once you buy a v1, you get free upgrades for life.

i've heard a lot of good things about the escort too. definitely a well known option.

btw, most photo and speed cameras work on old school technology too, so almost all radar detectors will pick up those

I don't own one, but the V1 has saved my butt many times while on the One Lap of America. I love the direction indicator.
