I'm leaving tomorrow for South Bend and my tenth time in this crazy event. This year I'll be co-driving with Robin Sparrow in his new BMW M3. Neil Simon, my usual co-conspirator, has work and family committments this year. Son Brian is also in an M3 with David Chow from Atlanta. They just arranged this partnership for the event via the Internet. Robin will be maintaining a blog on which I'll be making some posts. www.onelapforlife.blogspot.com
This will be Robin's fifth One Lap and he now has raised ~$350,000 for ZERO - the Project to End Prostate Cancer. Dave Miller and Greg Lindsay from NCC will be first-timers in Dave's E36 M3.
Seventy five cars are projected to start (11 BMWs). Apparently TV actor and pro sports car racer Patrick Dempsey was unable to clear his schedule so he could participate. Unfortunately Eric Brum's wild M Coupe with fiberglass body, big wing, and Dinan S62 racing V8 couldn't overcome last minute teething issues. He'll be going in co-driver Andrea Cairone's S54 M Coupe. Dave Flogaus of the Delaware Valley Chapter has entered his E90 M3. Mike Renner, chief instructor at the BMW Performance Center, hopes to win the Alternative Fuel class with a BMW 335d (diesel). Probably the fastest BMW will be the E90 M3 of Dan and Ben Shaut. It has an Active Autoworks supercharger.
Briefly we will be doing two 3-lap time trials each day on road-course race tracks and driving most of the night to get to the next track. An autocross and some drag races are also thrown into the mix. The One Lap website www.onelapofamerica.com has the entry list, schedule, and past results. Results each day from this year are usually posted within 6-hours.
This year's schedule has us going to tracks near:
Saturday, Apr 30, Grissam AFB, IN
Sunday May 1, Summit Point, WV
Monday May 2, Kershaw and Greenville, SC
Tuesday May 3, Daytona Beach, FL
Wednesday, May 4, New Orleans, LA
Thursday, May 5 Birmingham, AL
Friday, May 6 Joliet, IL
Saturday, May 7 back to South Bend for awards banquet.
The first time trial Sunday is scheduled to start at 8:30 and all cars should complete their morning runs by 10:30. That will also give you time to get to the Deutsche Marque Concours d'Elegance in Vienna before the judging is completed.
