Not Loving my 335 this morning....

On my way to work on 95 Northbound, car in front of me in the left most lane finally figured out that, given that I was fairly close to him, no one was in front of him, and open space in the 3 right lanes, he should move over. Only took 3-4 miles for them to wake up!

So, I step down to let the twins run......

    And.....

    Limp mode!

Second time this year. HPFP was just replaced, about 2 months ago!

So, I'm now left thinking, is it the HPFP (I haven't had the long crank, or any other symptoms of HPFP failure). Is it something else (and what could that be?)

And, my lease expires in February. I had intended to buy the car out of the lease, but I do find myself second guessing that choice this morning....

If you didn't have the other symptoms, it could be something different, so no way to tell unless you have someone look at it.

I'd be hesitant to buy the car after the lease is up, maybe a NA M3?

    Vanos...

It could be lots of other things like the two VANOS solenoids I had replace in my car two weeks ago. No warning and then, limp mode. On the plus side there was only a minor reduction in the power output of the engine until they were replaced. On the minus side I'm out of warranty and I had to pay for it myself.

Paul, yes, the appeal of a new car is definitely there, I would consider the 335d maybe.

jongchen, thanks for that information, hadn't heard that before about the VANOS. I thought all of the 335s are still under warranty (unless you exceeded the mileage). Yes, the limp mode is still pretty powerful, particularly compared with my power challenged Miata....

335d would be nice, but i thought they only came in auto.

I lost my first HPFP just as you described and my car was only 4 months old with no long cranks (2008). Second pump went out with long cranks and replaced by dealer after some persistent bitching. Currently, on my third. I haven't had any problems in about 4 months.

I've gone through 2 HPFPs, I'm on my third (replaced about 2 months ago), both failures had long cranks and repeated limp modes.

This one today felt different, and the more I read about the VANOS problem the more it seems like that might be the issue. In some respects, sorry to have to say it, this car being a total loss (there are some anecdotes on e90post of people with this problem who had their cars replaced due to engine damage), I would rather have that result (although it seems unlikely in my case). The VANOS problem seems to appear more in cold weather, and if my gas mileage starts dropping (I usually get 26 MPG average), then I will know with a good deal of certainty that it is the VANOS problem.
