    Transmission flush

    Hi, dudes

I'm gonna flush my auto tranny, which has ~45000 miles on it.
Is is OK to flush it?

I'm a bit worried that flushing may hurt converter or anything since it has many miles for 4 years.

    Thanks,,

BMW says that their transmission fluid is "lifetime" fluid - that's rubbish.

Depending on your year and model (it's always helpful to post this info), you may have a transmission filter to change too. A good quality ATF (like Royal Purple) is a good for maintenance of the auto transmissions.

This term "lifetime" in all warantys should have the mileage listed that is expected to be achieved at time of death!, I think your mileage is a little over Mike's old school maintenance in the Roundel, and can be problematic if the new fluid and flush breaks some sludge loose that gets lodged in a valve body, very common in delayed tranny maintenance.

I would say do the flush now; the tranny in my x5 died around 90k and i still kick myself that i learned $3k later.

I want my cars to last MY lifetime, not a component's lifetime. You're fine to flush with 45-60K miles. I agonized over this with our then 9-year-old E46 with 60K miles on its GM auto tranny. Did the BG flush at Convenience during one of the DIY tech sessions. Its has functioned perfectly.

Go ahead and flush the transmission. There are several DIYs on the net on how to do it. I used MaxLife (it is BMW compatible). Figure parts and fluid will cost you around $100. It can be done at a DIY event.
