(2010) Bavaria Video From 1986 Charity Autocross With NCC Sponsored Cars

I just recently used a cheap video capture device to get some old 8mm analog video into digital form. The two links below are from a 1986 charity autox (put on by DC region SCCA I believe) where the NCC sponsored some of us to run. I'm driving my 1972 Bavaria (heavily modified, i.e. listen to the sweet triple Weber song) that old-timers here will recall. In the first video at the end you can see "Mad Max" go crazy driving an E12 528i after hitting too many cones (in a borrowed car from what I recall as Max had the green 3.0CS).

I have some more videos of Summit Point track days ~1985-1987 that I'll get to at some point...you know, when track days were basically time trials with times published in the newsletter (and when we did the tag team races at the end of the day).

If you look through the crowd at the starting line in the 2nd video, you can see Cory Laws' baby blue E12 530i which was a heavily modified one too. Does anyone know if Cory is still around and what happened to his E12?

    Thanks,

Thanks for these Chuck. Those were fun times. These were from the Childrens Hospital Benefit Autocross that the Metropolitan Washington Councel of Sports Car Clubs put on every year. Note the two mirror-image courses. We invited local police departments to enter teams driving their cruisers also. This particular event was at the Landmark Shopping Center in Alexandria. The lot has been covered with a parking garage now. Max Rodriguez is still around. His green 3.0CS belongs to the late Anthony Mueller's son. Cory is still around and participates is some of our karting events. Are you still in NC?

Hey Woody! Yep, still here in Raleigh. It's nice to hear that Max's E9 is still around as I stupidly sold my Bavaria in 1994. I found it again in 2006 and the owner had left it for dead in a field or something...here's what it looked like from some pictures I was sent: http://www.tradebotics.com/Bavaria/sad/. Does Cory still have the E12, or is it sill around someplace?

If you're ever up for some autocross travel, my local club, www.thscc.com, puts on some great events with almost all of them at one of three airports, so we have some nice courses. On my youtube account there are some videos of some with me and my daughter driving. We've got the next one coming up at the Danville VA airport toward the end of July.

Excellent job preserving the video all these years and converting it! It's clearer than most of the autocross videos people post today.

Very cool footage!! Those tires look very low profile for that time period. It's sad to see these amazing cars and think where most of them are today.
I want to check out the Summit Point vids now.

If you saw the tires in real life today, you'd think they were tall sidewalls...they were 225/50-16 on 8" wide wheels. At the time, they were "exotic" in size and profile back then before there was even such a thing as a 17" diameter which was still a few years away.

Ah - familiar sounds! I have basically the same engine in a 72 3.0CS (Korman stage 2 3.0 with triple 40DCOEs, headers, etc.

Strangely, given this thread, I also have Cory Laws old engine! It blew a headgasket years ago and is way down on my project list.

Ray Korman built the engine in my Bavaria in 1981, and I drove the !@#% out of that engine for many years/miles at many track events, autocrosses, etc. It was still running great when I sold the car in 1994. Any idea whatever happened to Cory's E12, other than the engine of course? It was in great shape the last time I saw it (which was of course about 23 years ago).

I remember thinking the 225/50-16s that came on the '88 M5 were so big. That became the stock size on my '96 328is with sport package. The first time I saw 17" wheels in person were the ones Ray Korman had fitted to his E32 7-series. I think it was at Oktoberfest around 1991. I thought, "How stupid. Very few tire manufacturers will bother to make a 17".
