If it helps you feel better Jim, the Z4 3.0 coupe (3rd place) was improperly classed.
Also, when I autocrossed my E46 M3, I would shift to first at Manassas High School lot.

In October 1994 we held an autocross on the air strip at Airlie Conference Center near Warrenton. I was tasked with designing the course on a patch of pavement that was 57 feet wide and 3,200 feet long. In the article I wrote for derBayerische I mention that I shifted gears 16 times - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th were needed for this 85 second course. A 944 Turbo was reaching 120 mph. Was it safe? Uh. . . probably not, but there were no incidents.
The article starts on page 8 of the Jan/Feb 1995 derBayerische:

This was the very definition of a "horsepower course" and my E30 325 was way down on hp to everyone above me with the possible exception of Vince Bly's MR2. I don't remember if it was normally aspirated, or not.

Give Woody a break. He had FTD on Oct 30th!! And 9th out of a jillion cars isn't bad, either.
