BMW’s redesigned-for-2008 5 Series fared worst of six luxury cars on side impact tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, earning a rating of Marginal. BMW disputed the meaningfulness of the single crash test run by IIHS. Rated higher than BMW were the Volvo S80, Acura RL, and near-luxury Kia Amanti, all rated Good; followed by the Mercedes E-Class and Cadillac STS, which were deemed Acceptable"
