The Z4 was the only BMW to crack the top three on J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study measuring 2004 cars. BMW was No. 7, Mini No. 27.

BMW again climbed another two notches and placed seven in the J.D. Power & Associates annual Vehicle Dependability Study, the measure of reliability among three-year-old (here 2004) cars. BMW was ninth and eleventh the previous two years. Mini was No. 27 this year after finishing No. 29 last year. The Z4 was the only BMW or Mini model to place in the top three among individual models, landing behind the Honda S2000 in the Compact Premium Sporty Car category.
The overall big news was that Lexus for the first time in 12 years didn’t have the top spot to itself. Buick tied Lexus with just 145 problems per 100 cars vs. an industry average of 216 problems per 100. Five of the top
