BMW’s X5 was ranked in the bottom half among midsize SUVs because of its ride, controls, and small third row.

The stiff ride of BMW’s X5 3.0si, combined with complicated controls, led Consumer Reports to rank the X5 No. 14 out of 18 midsize SUVs, including the five it tested in its July 2007 issue. The magazine summary said Highs included “Handling, smooth powertrian, front-set comfort, fit and finish” while Lows were the “Ride, untuitive controls and shifter, tiny third-row seat, delay for rear camera, [and] two-step ignition procedure.” CR added that on broken pavement, “the suspension delivers constant snappy motions back-and-forth and side-to-side … we found the constant quick, short motions uncomfortable.”
