BMW’s X5 was best among five high-end, sporty SUVs tested by Automobile magazine, in part because it didn’t go overboard trying to make an SUV be too sporty.

“The X5 invented this genre,” Automobile magazine says of the sporty SUV, “and BMW’s approach is still the most rewarding.” That was the magazine’s conclusion in “Fast Flood,” Automobile’s June comparison of five sporty SUVs: the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, Range Rover Sport Supercharged, and BMW X5 4.8. The magazine didn’t rank them 5-4-3-2-1, but that’s more of less the order of favorites. Jeep got dinged the most (“more of an amusing toy than a serious machine”), BMW the least.
