Speed limits on Germany’s Autobahn an issue again and this time the attack isn’t on the grounds of reduced energy consumption but to reign in global warming. A recent article in The New York Times, “Call for Speed Limit Has German Blood at 178 m.p.h. Boil,” lays out the polarization over the issue.
In early March, the European Union environment commissioner, Stavros Dimas of Greece, fired the opening salvo, saying the German government out to introduce a speed limit on the autobahn. Actually, half the 7,500 miles of Germany’s Autobahn network already is speed controlled.
