What are your goals detail-wise? Are you trying to remove some scratches, get the car looking show quality? Just looking for some paint protection that will be low maintenance? How often do you plan to actually detail your car(s)? There are some products that can make your car look great but will only last a couple weeks. This doesn't bother some of the detailers out there since they are re-doing their car every couple weeks. I'm more of a once or twice a year person. If you know what you want to get out of it first, it will be a lot easier to sort through that huge amount of info that is out there.

My eta looks like but so wife bought me a moderate priced buffer not orbital 7" sized. Adjustable. Been hand compounding it now I want to high speed buff and polish it to shine. I did it buy hand and it looks good but I know it can look better.

You might also checkout http://www.properautocare.com. This site is mainly for purchasing detailing supplies and equipment, but they also have a bunch of how to articles that can come in handy. I have bought many things from them and highly recommend them.

Low speed polish is almost always better than high speed. It tends to keep the surface cooler.

I never use higher than 1800 rpm, even with the first round of polish to remove scratches.
