Just want to give a quick update. It was indeed the electric fan. Got a new one from Fairfax BMW (with member discount), dropped it in and now the temperature gauge is back to normal (in the middle)....

Thanks for all the input guys. As far as the fan clutch, my car does not have a fan clutch.
