I'm very excited about this. It will be my first ///M Day. I've never done Tail of the Dragon but would love to. I'll have to do it on the way back though; I would prefer to drive down with the group so I can be sure to make the factory tour.

I'm thinking of leaving a day early on Thursday morning Thursday afternoon and Friday morning then making the 150 mile run into Greenville; there are some awesome roads between the Dragon and Greenville. The Fontana Lodge is at the South end of the Dragon; stayed there last Labor Day weekend with some Z Car Club folks. The Dragon is best early in the morning when the traffic is light. The National Capital and Tarheel Chapters are headed back to South Carolina on April 21st for our first ///M Club Day driving event of 2012 at the BMW Performance Center.
As always, the Performance Center provides current model ///M cars, instructors, gas, tires, lunch and a first-class facility for a fun-filled day. Just show up ready to drive! The school’s focus is to improve your driving skills through a combination of driving exercises, classroom instruction and competitive events. No helmets or previous driving school experience is required. All skill levels are welcome and encouraged to attend.
This school is a special program designed by the Performance Center staff specifically for BMW CCA chapters. It will be similar to previous ///M Club Day events, which have included instruction on proper driving position, vehicle dynamics, car-control skills, weight-transfer, oversteer/understeer and improved vision. The day is divided into morning and afternoon sessions which mix skill exercises and competitive events, including skid pad wet/dry courses, braking and handling practice, autocross and more.
We will be driving current model BMW ///M Cars for this event. Please note that the Performance Center staff continually makes changes to this program, so session contents and the cars available may vary from one school to the next.
Our event hotel is the Greenville Marriott. The special BMW rate includes the breakfast buffet for up to two people plus Internet service. Register at: www.marriott.com/GSPAP (http://www.marriott.com/gspap) and enter BMW as the Corporate code. The Marriott has a great lobby bar for getting together after the driving and dinner events. Remember, no food service is available for breakfast on Saturday morning at the Performance Center.

If you have more time, you might want to pickup 74 East to 276.
I don't know how 74 is, but 276 is pretty sweet too!

Friday's route from Fontana Village to the Marriott in Greenville; please note this is my personal itinerary and not the caravan planned by the NCC...That's a good choice too. I've been on those roads several times. :)
Some really nice waterfalls along the way too. Ceaser's Head is a nice park.

I thought about picking up a GoPro Hero as well for this trip since I didn't have one last year, but I ended up getting a RAM Suction Mount for my wife's Lumix camera. IIRC, there are camera systems mounted in the car, but they weren't in use for our ///M School last year.

A buddy and I are also staying at the Marriott in Greenville and since we're flying in, we may need rides to the various activities.

The only thing I don't like about the GoPro is I find it a pain to play back videos.
It's not the most intuitive thing. To me anyway.

Folks for everyone coming down on Friday there were a half dozen lane closures on I-81 south this afternoon. Also I-81 was closed at mile marker 132 because of blasting. Traffic was diverted off onto HWY 11 for a few miles. Added 30 minutes to my trip. Might want to add some time to make the trip down.
