BMW’s display on the lower level includes a 1M Coupe in Valencia Orange. BMW executives stressed production will be limited with deliveries beginning in the spring, but we already knew that. At the show’s press preview Thursday, BMW NA President Jim O’Donnell also announced that the 4-cylinder engine is coming back to America late this year. It will be 2-liters -- just like the 2002, but a bit peppier -- 240 HP and 260 lb.ft. He wouldn’t yet say what vehicles will use it, but expect it in the X1, also due in the US late in 2011. (Ultimately it seems likely to replace the basic N52 3-liter 6. The new turbo-charged 4-cylinder, which seems to be an N55 with 2 cylinders chopper off, has more power and will get better MPG, so it would be redundant also to have the magnesium-aluminum 6-cylinder.)

O’Donnell said he’s a big fan of diesels, noting nearly 1 in 4 X5s sold last year was a diesel. He added BMW will offer more diesels in the future, but gave no details.

On another matter, who designed the DC convention center? Be prepared for lots of walking.
