View Full Version : Columbia NCC Social New Fall Location Poll - VOTE NOW!!!!

Just wanna gauge whether we need to move the Columbia social in September to a new location. We've had our biggest turnouts at PubDog and I consistently hear a lot of great feedback about it; especially since we now have a dedicated parking area. However, I know some are tired of a menu with only pizza.

Here are the choices:
1) PubDog - why change a good thing?
http://www.pubdog.net/

2) Champps - back to an old favorite at Columbia Mall and the top of the parking garage
http://www.champps.com/Default.aspx?tabid=267

3) Pizzeria Uno's - new location at the Mall, next to Champps
http://www.unos.com/

4) Rams Head Tavern - Savage Mill; new location, plenty of parking
http://www.ramsheadtavern.com/savage/index.html

Poll will end Aug 12th and winner announced at the August Columbia social at PubDog.

Please note we have chosen these 4 places based on past experiences and member's suggestions. IMO all locations have quality food and good parking (although some better than others). These will be the only locations considered, so please cast your votes accordingly. Any other suggestions may/may not be used for future socials.

BTW, if I cant strike a deal with the winner to host our event, then i'll have to try with whoever finished #2, etc

Uno's.

I like pizza. I'm from Chicago. Uno's is close enough to the real thing to satiate me.

Uno's.

I like pizza. I'm from Chicago. Uno's is close enough to the real thing to satiate me.

finally some love for Uno's. i cant say its the best pizza, but its decent. plus, they have a pretty wide range of different foods to eat.

i think i'll hold off on voting till the very last minute; maybe i'll break a tie or something :D

since we usually have about 40+ people at the Columbia socials, I'm hoping to have that many people cast their votes. let's go people, vote, vote, vote!!!

Parking at Ram's Head is no problem at all. It has a large overbuilt and underutilized lot. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&ll=39.135836,-76.827103&spn=0.003275,0.006968&t=h&z=18&msid=116550156599058532551.00046e651cda8c4f4df3c The upper sections are perpetually empty, we'd have nothing but Bimmers. Good food, great beer (Fordham, you may have heard of it), and lots of space. Outdoor seating when the weather's nice, three different levels inside, free appetizers before 7, comfortable, decent lighting, and not so loud that you can't hear yourself think.

Dang, that's what I was thinking because all the choices are great. Concerns over the parking at Savage Mills is valid unless you are on the back lot, and even then it can be tough to find spots if there is a big party or wedding reception. Maybe Thursdays are clear of that sort of issue.

You could go all corporate on them and hit all of them up and see who gives you the best deal.:biggrin::biggrin:

Well, that sounds like a winner. I find it baffling that any business would not be dying to get a group like this every month. They surely make a bunch of money on those nights.

Side note: The last last gathering was just as much fun as the first one I attended, even if it was a smaller group. My only regret is that I had to bug out early. I started feeling worse and worse as the indoor gathering went on. Went to the Doctor the next evening, and it turns out I had a pretty severe infection going on in my foot and ankle from (of all things) a spider bite while at work. I didn't even know I had been bitten. Go figure.:eek::eek:

Ive never understood that... They just give you 2 stupid small glasses for what a normal glass of beer would cost.

I would guess that they're thinking that it makes the customer feel like they are getting something special or extra. The first event I came to, I brought the wife and kids (fully prepared to pay for them separately) but they looked at the menu and decided to go to Hana Mura on their own instead. Got me outta buying dinner, but they took my ride to get home and I had to ride with my Brother-in-law. hehehe

i'm sure thats it since thats the only place i know that does that. they must have gotten a really good deal on buying all those glasses b/c i sure as hell wouldnt want to be the dishwasher lol

Actually, the glasses they give you are 9 oz. each. Thus, you are getting 18 oz. of beer, two more oz. than a normal pint, for $4... not a bad.

Apparently it's called "a gimmick". I believe they got the idea from McSorleys Ale House in New York.

It's a bit like being served two half cheeseburgers on two different plates. Fun I guess, if you're into that sort of thing.

But I am bored stiff of the place. Every month it's guaranteed to be the sos- because they just don't offer anything else.

yeah, i know people are tired of just pizza and beer....but i still like the atmosphere, waitstaff, and new parking situation. if they served other food, we probably wouldnt be having this discussion :)

i'm surprised no one else has slammed any of the other options

This posting won me over to voting for Rams Head. Best beer around IMHO, and the food is really good. That lot is HUGE, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I have never really ever seen it full. The last thing to sway me is that there are the shops and such that I know the wife would like to endulge in before the eating and drinking and socializing.:biggrin::biggrin:

Lastly, BMWs are classy cars, and Savage Mills has a certain amount of style and class that compliments our cars. Besides, hanging out on the parking lot of Columbia Mall reminds me of the old high school days of hanging out on the Glen Burnie Burger King lot oh so many years ago.

actually Uno's has expanded their menu quite a bit over the years. they offer a lot more than pizza.

Rams Head seems to be picking up some steam

Uno's is also rated one the most unhealthy places to eat... Insane levels of fat, calories, and sodium in almost every item on their menu. I'm not a health nut by any means, but I think we can do better than Uno's. Also, we've already done the Champ's thing, and Pub Dog, although having a great wait staff ;) ;), has run its course - thus, my vote for Ram's Head... Just my $.02

pseto
08-13-2009, 07:59 AM
Looks like we have a winner and thanks to everyone who voted. This is by far our most popular social, so finding a suitable place to host it is crucial. I think we also had the biggest participation in terms of # of votes in any of the polls I've done, so maybe we can get close to 60 people at the next social (and we usually come close)!!!

I'll start talking to Rams Head and hopefully will be able to strike a deal shortly, so stay tuned to see where we'll be in September.

pseto
08-23-2009, 07:59 PM
Well unfortunately, I was unable to come to terms with Rams Head. They wanted us to agree to a buffet which I didnt get much positive feedback from members at PubDog. In addition, they were not flexible enough handling such a large group without a guaranteed headcount. While I always ask for people to RSVP, the numbers never come close to how many actually show up.

For the next few months we'll be at Champps since they can easily accomodate our group no matter how big or small.

Maybe Rams Head will be an option in the future....we shall see.

KevKaos
08-24-2009, 08:45 AM
Oh well, it was a valiant effort, but if Rams Head is that inflexible, it is surely their loss. I assume there will be some detailed directions coming out for those of us that do not frequent the Columbia Mall that often. Either way, I'm looking forward to meeting more members at future meets.

pseto
09-09-2009, 01:18 PM
so I get a call today from Rams Head asking to confirm our reservation tomorrow night...WTH!!!

they have now said that they are OK with us ordering off the menu (no buffet) and they can reserve the top mezzanine level for us. a little too late, huh?

we will be at Champps Sept-Nov with Rams Head a strong possibility for the winter (Dec-Feb). There's no way I wanna be anywhere near Columbia Mall during the holidays so Rams Head may be a viable option now. We still have to work thru the RSVP issue since I usually have NO clue how many will show up (often times I get 10 RSVPs and 40+ people show up lol).

I will keep you posted.
