I'm bad with names and all that. If you're like me you remember cars better than people. Well, I thought we might put some faces and info on the cars we see at autocross by presenting ourselves a little. Pictures encouraged :)

My name is Anders Skandsen. I'm part of the NCC Autocross committee trying to help out with advertising. I run a silver E30 318iS usually, but soon you'll see me in a white E36 325iS that is being built for NASA Spec3 racing. I have also brought my wife's black E39 528iA Sport. I'm a Norwegian working for the Norwegian embassy in DC.

Pictures of me and my cars.

Hey, My name is Sam Bell, I drive an 86 325es for autocross duty. The family truckster is an 02 325xit. My daily driver is a 97 Ford f250 powered by biodiesel. I like long walks on the beach and puppies.

Hi, I am Sam, as my username states, (Sam Denny that is). I make a fool of myself in an alpine 1991 BMW 318is, it has Kosei K1 wheels and H&R Race springs with Bilstien Sport shocks.

Here is my car:

Hi, my name is James LeCompte. I bring my red '01 M Roadster. I don't like long walks or puppies.
That's the puppy lover Sam Bell in the passenger seat and thanks to Katie Thayer for the shot.

:icon_wave Katie Thayer...other half of Jonathan so I guess I can kinda claim the M Coupe. I don't actually drive in the autocross but I'm always there. This year I was elected to drive the trailer out to the events. I stick around all day and hang out with everyone. Oh yeah...sometimes I take pics too

I'm Ron Hougham. I've been driving this around in T2 this season (my first). I don't think it's plowing through a turn in this shot, but I'm positive it did shortly after. I'm the tall guy (6'7") milling around, usually in the afternoons.

Hi everyone!

My name is Jonathan Thayer and I'm currently the autocross program chairman (along with many other things that I participate in with the club). Autocross, to me, is one of the best "grassroots" motorsports activities out there. To me, it's the best low cost motorsports activity with a unique social aspect. If it wasn't for autocross, I'd probably be racing lawnmowers.

Most recognize me by my car, an Imola Red '99 M Coupe. Her name is "Mindy" and she has a personality unlike any other lady (and she definately punishes me for things I do wrong). I try my best to drive it well, but just like everyone else, I too could benefit from extra seat time. I purchased it in November 2007 almost completely stock. Since then, I've added a few go fast goodies, and it will continue to evolve. I've attached a picture to this post if you don't know the car. More about the car can be found here in our garage section: http://forum.nccbmwcca.org/garage_vehicle.php?do=view_vehicle&id=2

I work as a staff accountant for DigitalBridge Communications, an internet service provider based in Ashburn, VA. We provide wireless (WiMax) access to rural communities throughout the states. http://www.digitalbridgecommunications.com/ is our website if you're interested in more about what and where we provide.

Outside of work, I'm currently completing my Masters in Science of Accountancy. If you need trouble sleeping at night, I could talk to you about the "interesting" parts of the accounting industry. Trust me, there's a reason why "interesting" is in quotations.

Since the above two take 95% of my time, I don't have a lot of spare time to denote to things I enjoy. However, when I do find a moment of serenity, you'll most likely find me tinkering with something. I'm never satisfied with "it works", rather I want to know "how it works".

I'm sure that's more information than you wanted to know about me. Have a great day!

Chris H... I've been doing NCC stuff for 5+ years; mainly autocross and Street Survival. I ran SCCA for a few years, but have only done 2-3 of their events the past couple years.

I always have a Toronto Blue Jays hat and some type of sports jersey/shirt on at the events. I'm also usually working tech inspection. I've been running my 95 318i automatic forever, so maybe I'll try some other car one day. Maybe a manual 318?

I love autocross, but I really want to do rallycross and w2w before I'm 30. Autocross satisfies my urges for now. I have a job that pays the bills and am a HUGE Toronto Blue Jays fan. While not autocrossing, I run, play any sport, and enjoy walks on the beach and walking my collie.

This is my favorite pic of my car: Hoosiers and a roof rack are a great combo...

I'm Ethan Blank, started Auto-X last year. It's been an amazing experience, on all levels. Becoming a better driver, having a lot of fun, learning a ton about all kinds of things, and meeting a lot of great people.

I started Auto-X in my E90 335 last year, but since I am also doing HPDE events I decided to switch for both Auto-X and HPDE to a Miata. Lots of great advice from many people contributed to that choice.

Although I'm not a pilot, I am a lawyer and do a lot of work financing aircraft (and other equipment), including representing an airline. I work out of Baltimore. My family and I moved here about 2.5 years ago, and it has been a great move in all respects. We picked Columbia for our home, and that also was a choice we are very happy with.

I'm Bogdan! I autox that loud, white, E90 M3 that you see running around most of the day. :)

I conduct the driver meetings and worker assignments for the events. I've been doing the autocross thing for about 6 or 7 years, mostly with the BMWCCA.

During the day, I can be found at Passport BMW writing service. If you ever feel like your job is not providing you with enough stress and gray hair, let me know... we can switch. :p

Pete
06-17-2009, 10:56 AM
I'm Pete (see Sig), former NCC Autocross chairman. I drive a 99 almost stock (Only mod: Exhuast) 911 (see below). I have been autocrossing for the better part of 8 years now and got my start with NCC and MCSCC (the now defunct Metro Council of Sports Car Clubs) and also did several seasons with the SCCA in my 98 BMW 323is which I sold a few years back for my first 911.

You can find me at the autocrosses when I'm not driving usually heckling the drivers on the PA. I also help out where ever needed and generally support the Committee where ever I can. I show up for set up and stay for tear down because I know how difficult running these events are and the chairman can use all the help they can get.

I too like long walks on the beach, walking my Jindo/Lab mix. :)

adam

I'm Captain Slow and I drive a 99 328is with coilovers, camber plates, and that's it. I've been doing this for about as long as Pete (above). My first event was a NCC event at Rosechunk where nearly every driver was off course more than half their runs. I briefly competed in SCCA and MCSCC but had the most fun at the NCC events. I have helped out with running timing, registration, results, course setup, pretty much anything and everything really.

Currently I'm a researcher at the University of Maryland where I am working on my masters of Public Health with a specialization in environmental health. I also teach tennis and compete on several teams in the area and play basketball twice a week all while keeping my girlfriend and baby entertained.

Long walks on the beach are for sissies! I take short walks on the beach so there's more time to drink at the bar by the pool where all the hotties are.

I work as a mechanic on the Presedential fleet Gulfstream aircraft at Andrews AFB.
I autocrossed a couple of times in the 90's with my RX-7 and Miata, but started back into 4 years ago when the BMW club was having events in Manassas. Been going to more and more autocrosses every year since, just don't know if I can afford tires to go to many more in one year.I also go to Mazda club events, but really enjoy the total experience at the BMW Club, especially when Pete is behind the Mic. You guys really know how to make things enjoyable even when it's 100 degrees out there, a class act IMHO.

Hi all, I am Emir. I first read about autocross on Grassroots Motorsports Magazine and tried it for the first time with NCCBMWCCA in 2007 (it was still at Ripken). I drive a silver 330Ci (see the picture attached). I am an Internal Audit Manager for Marriott International so I travel about 30% of my time. Because I have to travel a lot for work I've only been able to go to a handful of our autocross events within the last three years. Hopefully I can go to more events since I am still slow:frown: and I don't go to events with any other clubs. Other than driving and fixing my car, I play golf a little bit and try to do a lot of DIY fixes around the house. Oh, I am also a CPA so I am sure Jonathan and I can talk about a lot of "interesting" Accounting stuff ...or not.

Hey All....I'm Craig Brickner and I've been doing NCC autox events since '06 since former NCC President Rafael Garces was a HPDE instructor and recommended it to me. Since then I've been hooked and incrementally been more and more involved. I do have a conflict though, and that's track events. It seems that it takes priority over autocrosses. I currently drive a '99 Mcoupe with several mods that improve handling, braking, and safety. I am functioning as NCC AX Registrar but admit that it's a very involved position that our Chairman makes look easy. I hope to get better at it as time progresses. Oh, I'm married and we're expecting out first autox'er...er baby...in September. My abilities to participate are subject to change in the near future.

Hi, I'm Brad and this is my second year autocrossing. My initials are BMW, otherwise I would drive a... well, I would still drive a BMW. I will always have a pink polo on for any form of motorsport. My car is the stock+tires blue 330Ci slushbox convertible, a decision I absolutely regret and will rectify next year with a Z4MC, understeer be damned. I'm a consultant; I hate long walks on the beach, because that is all time I could have been spent working.

hello all,

gina here. 752

i've been a cca member for a couple years, but other than chapterfest last year, this is my first year doing motorsports. i've only made it out to autocross once so far. i got ill the night before the autox school, so now i feel ill-prepared for autox. people tell me to come out anyway because it will help me with my new love - driving schools.

i've gone to 2 (summit and shenandoah) so far, and i'm registered for 2 more, VIR (north) in july with the tarheels and then oktoberfest for 2 HPDS days. i can't seem to get enough. i might sign up for one more, VIR (full) in september.

during the day i'm a software engineer for a small gov't contractor that builds military flight simulators. at night i game (mostly online RPGs, but right now i'm playing Soul Calibur IV) and watch anime (or asian dramas).

nice to meet everyone. :icon_peac

Hi,

My name is Maria.. I have a stock 325i e46. This is my 5th bmw (I believe I posted the pics of other ones somewhere under my gallery or garage..) and I have never had any other cars. I am a terrible autocrosser, just started this year after I totaled my husband's x5 4.4. I have 2 dogs australian shepherd/lab mix girl who is 3 years old and newfoundland boy, who just turned 11 months. Also my husband Alex autocrossed once and he is planning to do it again. Since his car is not allowed (manual x5), he is driving mine. After he got his sailing boat as his 30th birthday present, he became a Coast Guard Auxillary member. We are both engineers (I am in software, Alex is in computer/hardware)

See the pictures below (Katie, thank you again for the pics)

"I am a terrible autocrosser, just started this year after I totaled my husband's x5 4.4."

Maria, I don't really think that is being fair to yourself. I've ridden along with you a few times. Particularly noticeable is your determination to be better (something I think your personality type will never be happy with even when you are first place) and your aggressiveness in that you seem comfortable putting the car through its places.

The things I saw you do were similar to what everyone complains about: understeering because of demanding too much from the front wheels.

For example, after driving through the showcase turn and returning through the double gate at the last autocross, there was a pointer cone that required a tight left turn afterward. It was a difficult turn since it was necessary to brake before the cone in a straight line, and hard due to the speed approaching it. You, like me and many others, had trouble there (to differing degrees).

We brake in a straight line to get 100% braking from the tires. If you turn at the traction limit for a turn, say 100% turn, you cannot accelerate at all without losing traction. So when you have a difficult turn like that one, many people try to brake late and throw the car into the turn... it would require 200% traction to make it. The car only has 100% and therefore ends up doing nothing, which looks like continuing straight-ish with a lot of noise and driver frustration.

Many people at that point feel they need to modify the car to "tune out" the "car's handling problems", ie. understeer when the tires (especially r-compound tires) would really just mask the problem and leave the driver committing the same errors.

I speak of this turn, because in my video of the day, although I did well, you can see my feet in it. I totally did this at that same turn. I was braking hard, but not slow enough to begin the turn in. I started anyway and understeered a bit as a result.. it wasn't horrible, but was not it proper form... I was not trying to trail brake, and did understeer too.

Your self criticism seems like it will last even when you finish first place.. it's a personality thing, but I feel it is not merited to the extent that you put yourself down as a "terrible autocrosser" or allude that maybe your driving caused you to crash a really nice X5. (sorry, I had to throw in "really nice" just kidding)

My name is Jon Levesque (pronounced Laveck) and I drive a Silver 2000 M Coupe that has H&R springs and Bilstein sport shocks and struts, IE subframe bushings, and dual ear diff reinforcement. I also have 2 power mods including the M50 manifold and a catback exhaust.

I have only started autocrossing this year and have only gone to 2 events both being at Summit Point. I have a lot to learn, but man is it fun!

The first pic (thanks to Mrs. Katie Thayer) is of my car and actually the 2nd run ever for me doing autocross. That is Jonathan Thayer in the passenger seat graciously showing me the ropes.

The second pics is of me and my wife.

Howdy, I'm John. I'm Network/Systems Engineer in Fairfax. I drive the '07 M Coupe, just got it a few months ago. I've previously owned a '95 M3, '02 M3 SMG, and an '02 C32 AMG. This is my first year doing motorsports and want to try to do it as much as possible from here on.

If you ever want to chat with me my AIM is xd3usx. :)

I might need to hop a ride along with you sometime Mr. Fiber... I'm not getting a Z4 Coupe, but if someone, say, were to buy my Z4 Roadster that is not for sale, I just might get one so I can track the thing and do autocross in it. Never been in a Z4 Coupe, so I wonder how much more rigid it really is.

It's an M so the suspension is already really stiff. I've owned an e36 M3, e46 M3, driven the Z4, Z4M roadster, and this, the M coupe.. It's noticeably more rigid than all of them. Dare I say the most rigid BMW... ever? CSL's excluded. I'll take you for a ride sometime.

Damn Dude... you was jus like passing people like nothing.

You might hurt peoples' feelings passing so quickly.. I'm like "is this a race, or are these people just sight seeing?"

Nice job.

that first batch of cars were all slower classes...i started behind them because i spazzed on the start time for the race. the white m3 at the end was in second place and should be a much faster car. my race car is stripped 325is, 2775lbs with me in it, stock (but balanced and blueprinted) engine, stock brakes, no aero aids.

My name is Mike and I bought my 05 M3 ZCP half a year ago as a birthday present to myself and I'm still learning to drive it. I work for the federal government and like to take pictures and videos and play the guitar.

Here's a picture of me in action during last Saturday's autocross (photo courtesy of Katie Thayer):

I am Patrick Henry, and I am the guy who drives the non-turbo Legacy at the BMW events. I had bought an E36 318i 5MT to build to autocross, btu it had a few issues AND I bought another project (my deceased grandfather's 88 Jeep Comanche) to work on, so I sold the E36. I got into autoX this year and have been driving the Legacy (and letting friends drive it).

I usually have a spare air compressor and other miscellaneous things that you need at autoX, so stop by if you need anything.

A month or so ago, I got another E36 (this one just a rolling chasis) to build for autoX, but when I went to source the drivetrain for it, I saw that the guy with the parts cars had a nice E30 that needed some minor work, so we worked out a deal to swap for the E30. Right now, I am working on getting it ready for next season, so that I don't have to track my daily driver. With a baby and another one on the way, it may be a slow process (for money AND time reasons).

The E30:
