WHAT: NCC Winter Drive to Catoctin Mountain Orchard http://www.catoctinmountainorchard.com in Thurmont, MD (near Camp David). This is the last chance to re-stock before Catoctin Mountain Orchard close until May 1. People have been known to leave CMO w/ 12+ pies. They are that good. CMO is a mom & pop operation specializing in homemade pies either cooked or frozen uncooked. They also have fresh fruits, preserves, jams, jellies, dressings and cider.
Note: I highly recommend ordering your pies ahead of time. CMO recommends we call ahead since we are a large group. Again this is the last day they will be open until May, so they may only have a limited number stocked. The pies can be ordered freshly baked or uncooked frozen. On the dry run some people brought a cooler w/ them to keep their pies from sliding around in the trunk. When you place your order, reference the NCC Winter Drive as the group you are with. The pies range in price from $8.95-$10.95. Check their site for the different types of pie.
IMPORTANT: I have spoken w/ CMO and they have asked that emails and call-in orders be deadlined by 2 days before we arrive.

We will then continue on to Schmankerl Stube (www.schmankerlstube.com (http://www.schmankerlstube.com)) in Hagerstown for lunch. They have excellent authentic German food. The owner is from Munich. I have been there twice and the food was like being back in Munich. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu. There is also a copy of their menu on the site. The restaurant comes highly recommended by Joern Esser (CA @<hidden> Passport and Munich native), also everyone that has been there w/ me has had high praise for the food. The lunch menu is reasonably priced @<hidden> around $10/entree.
There is a parking garage about 1 1/2 blocks from the restaurant which is free on the weekends. When myself, Paul and a few others went up the lot was completely empty when we arrived and when we departed. So, issues w/ door ding and other damage will not be a problem.
From Schmankerl Stube we will travel to Lost Creek Vineyard in Leesburg, Va. for wine tasting. Afterwards you can either go home or hit the Leesburg Outlets.
The route I have chosen is full of fun, empty twisty roads. This will be a fun day for just a drive w/ people whom share your obsession. Here are the pics and reviews from the dry run some of us did on Dec. 20th: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=192503. Everyone only did from Sugarloaf to Schmankerl Stube, which is the first 1/2 of the drive. The rest of the drive is just as fun.

Are winter tires mandatory? I'm sure this tour will occur rain or shine (or snow or ice or ...).

Oh, I forgot, Maryland is a southern state. Thank goodness for global warming.

Vic

I would say summer tires may be a bad idea anytime temps are below 45 degrees per Tire Rack.
But since this drive is mainly mountain roads use your discretion.

If you get lost or have some time stop by Camp David and say hello to the Marines and Secret Service. W is in Crawford.

Camp David is a very cool place and even getting a just a tour is great.

And no they dont offer tours. Tours are offered to you( DOD and other executive branch employees who work with the folks there).

Nothing is more fun then driving on I81 on track tires forget summer tires in the snow.

For those of us in the Baltimore area (at least me), I'm thinking a Baltimore meeting point (like Ellicott City) would be a good move for us Northerners. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/images/smilies/thumbup.gif Then we could meet the rest at someplace like the Orchard - I'd have to leave Friday night to venture down DC-way to meet them http://www.1addicts.com/forums/images/smilies/bellyroll.gif

Whatcha think Baltimore folks?

For those of us in the Baltimore area (at least me), I'm thinking a Baltimore meeting point (like Ellicott City) would be a good move for us Northerners. http://www.1addicts.com/forums/images/smilies/thumbup.gif Then we could meet the rest at someplace like the Orchard - I'd have to leave Friday night to venture down DC-way to meet them http://www.1addicts.com/forums/images/smilies/bellyroll.gif

Whatcha think Baltimore folks?

Have Fun,
Rick

That defeats the purpose of a tour ... it would be called a meet if you just joined up somewhere.

That sounds good - are you going to Montgomery Mall from there?

I just can't see going 40 miles south thru DC traffic to then head to a point Northwest from my original start point - Part of the Balt./DC hassle. . .

Rick

I am signed up - and my wife will be coming with me. I was unsure about my passenger until now - am I good to go?

Also, did I hear that you are meeting some folks at Sugarloaf Mountain? If so, I'd like to be part of that rather than going 50 miles south to meet up at Montgomery Mall. Is that workable?

Have Fun,
Rick

Just to clear up the confusion. The drive is still originating from Sugarloaf Mtn departing @<hidden> 0845. The caravan from Montgomery Mall is for people heading up from the south to Sugarloaf that may have issues finding it or in my case just appreciates the look of a bunch of Bimmers going down the hwy.

AGAIN FOR ALL THE SLOOOOOW PEOPLE:biggrin:. The drive is still starting @<hidden> Sugarloaf. You do not have to meet us @<hidden> Montgomery Mall.

Okay - let me make sure I got it straight:
Sugarloaf @<hidden>:45 sharp.

I might have seen it, but can you post an address for Sugarloaf that I can put into my GPS?

Have Fun,
Rick

P.S. In the immortal words of Roseanne Roseannadanna: Nevermind

The address to enter into your Nav to get to the base of the Sugarloaf Mtn:
7901 Comus Rd, Dickerson, MD 20842

Is there any problem with two more "tag-alongs" since we did not meet the deadline on the 22nd?:frown:

I will know more by mid-week. By then I will know if anyone whom said they were coming has cancelled. Also if it rains I will know whom is still coming. If it snows then obviously it is cancelled, because we will be going through the mtns.

The reason for closing registration was capacity of the restaurant.

Algie:

When I called the orchard bakery yesterday & ordered my pies for next weekend. The lady asked me what time I thought the BMW group would get there. I told her that we planned to meet at 8:30 a.m. at Sugarload Mountain. She told me that it would be better if we didn't arrive till 10:00 a.m. even though they open at 9 a.m. Jsut a heads up.

Correct we won't arrive until 10am or soon thereafter. The first leg to CMO is about 75 - 90 mins.
