April 8, 2007</p> Nick Heidfeld brought his BMW-Sauber home fourth overall in the Formula One Grand Prix of Malaysia, holding off a late-race challenge by Felipe Massa of Ferrari. Heidfeld’s teammate Robert Kubica ran a trouble-plagued race, finishing 18th, last among the cars running at the end of the race. It was Heidfeld’s second consecutive fourth place finish.
The race, run in 90-degree weather, belonged to McLaren-Mercedes. World champion Fernando Alonso led from flag to flag, securing his first win with his new team and vindicating his often-criticized decision to switch from the Renault team with which he had won his two championships. His teammate, rookie Lewis Hamilton of the UK, showed that his performance in the season opener in Australia was no fluke. Starting from fourth, he got by the Ferraris of Massa and Kimi Raikkonen early in the race, and held on to second place, holding off a hard-charging Raikkonen in the closing laps of the race.
