Car and Driver’s cover story on small, fun cars. Mini Cooper S finished third. The winner: a Mazdaspeed 3.
March 27, 2007</p>The Mini Cooper S cuteness factor (that and the engine) got it to third place but no further in Car and Driver’s review of five $25,000 sport sedans in its May 2007 issue. In “On the Road to Bagdad [AZ],” the outcome was 1. Mazdaspeed 3, 206 of 250 possible points. 2. Volkswagen GTI, 199. 3. Mini Cooper S, 189. 4. Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V. 5. Subaru Impreza WRX, 168.
“The clutch is snappy quick, the brakes are abrupt, the steering is darty, the ride is nasty,” Car and Driver said of the Mini. “Yep, they [Mini designers] managed to capture ’60s rawness in a brand new $23,900 box.” In its summary, the magazine liked: “The exuberant interior design. Instant turbo torque. EZ-to-grab door handles.” Turnoffs were these lows: “Twitchy in the twisties. Hyperactive stability control. Goofy knobs and switches.”
