Anyone know a reasonably priced place near fairfax to service your auto transmission. The dealer wants $300. I have been told that it is a "lifetime fill", but I can't believe that it's true.

Thanks,

Kevin

I would call Convenience Car Care in Manassas.

http://www.conveniencecarcare.com/

We had a DIY event there last summer and I talked to the owner about doing this service to my car (it is still on my to do list). I don't remember the exact figure that he quoted for the service, but I think it was slightly less than $200.

Part of the reason that the cost is high is that the "lifetime" fluid is expensive. Many have replaced that fluid with other good fluids, but some people (and independent shops) suggest using only the original BMW fluid if you do replacement in an automatic transmission, not some other brand of fluid due to compatibility issues. If you have lifetime fluid in the unit, there will be a sticker on the transmission noting that. Some independent shops stock the BMW lifetime fluid.

YMMV. OAC.

The other reason is that the procedure for replacing the fluid is somewhat complicated. There is a very elaborate sequence of steps that have to be followed. It is not like changing your oil.
