I just wanted to remind everyone that we have a DIY on the schedule for this Saturday at Convenience Car Care in Manassas.

We only have three people registered right now. It would be great to add a few more.

See the event schedule for the registration form...

It's funny. I get emails from people asking about DIYs or why aren't we doing them. Then we hold one and people don't take advantage of it. Granted the summer many people are away but you would think there would be enough DIYers in the area that need access to a lift and help from others.

Darn, as normal I'll be out of town flying. I need to rewire my Aux fan as a colling fan unrelated to AC system. I need to do a headgasket on my 89 325i, could do it on base at the auto hobby shop but it's more enjoyable with fellow enthusiasts.

I would love to attend but I forgot and made plans. :(

I always have a closet full of pieces that should be on my car. ;)

I cross-posted on bf.c to hopefully get some additional interest since I would love to see more events like this.

I think I have to work this Saturday, but if not... am I allowed to bring a part there to DIY (i.e. an E36 X-brace + hardware). I'm assuming it's a relatively easy install?

I was somewhat confused on the site as it says we need to buy parts from the place???

I was somewhat confused on the site as it says we need to buy parts from the place???I should make that clearer next time. I think the original plan was for people to buy parts from the place if they sold parts, such as a dealer.

Count me in. (Registration form completed.) I have a set of plugs that I need to install, and new air filter.

I know, not exactly heavy duty stuff, but that is probably a good thing ;)

I look forward to meeting everyone.

Looks like I will be coming and meeting a few folks. I'm new to the board. I have a 1994 325i, and I'll be attempting a set of motor mount replacements. I discovered a fan blade tobe broken, so I replaced it, and when I did so, I see that the fan blades can hit the radiator shroud. I believe that usually means a mount has failed. However, I got underneath the car, and can't tell which one, so I guess we'll just replace both then, huh :).

Anyway, I can try and assist others when I'm done, assuming my car doesn't fall apart.

I'm in - after two HPDE's in two months it's time for an oil change and bleed the brakes. If time permits I'd like to mess with the front and rear camber too. I assume they will have the filter and synthetic oil available for purchase on site?

Just spoke to Tim at CC and he is ordering the filter for my car so it will be there tomorrow. If you are not bringing parts you might want to call him ahead of time.

The DIY event at Convience on Saturday was GREAT. I got more done in the 3.5 hours in the shop then I would in my garage all day.

I managed to do the following:
- New drop in air filter
- New spark plugs
- Oil change
- Tightened the bolts on the bottom of the transmission sump that I didn't even know was leaking.
- Rear differential fluid change
- Front camber adjustment

I would like to thank Rob for setting the DIY up and the owner Tim Tyrell for being a very gracious host. Tim and his technician Derrick checked on everyone periodically to make sure we had everything we needed. They helped get cars on lifts and provided guidance or any extra tools we required.

The discussions, encouragement, and assistance from the other club members also made for a great afternoon.

I second SMOODY's comments - good job Rob and thanks again to Tim and his crew at Convience Car Care. I'm looking forward to the next one.

I must also throw out my compliments. This was my first time meeting people, and it was great. The shop was clean, my motor mounts went in with no problem, and the mechanic confirmed a ball joint problem with the car that I suspected might be the problem. I thought that would be too difficult for me, so I left the car with them to fix, and they even loaned me a car!

And, if you guys feel like having some real fun, there is a race they help sponsor at Old Dominion in Manassas. They will even let you race one of their cars! This sounds like an event we need to do, doesn't it?

Thanks for the thanks guys. I had a blast also, and Timmy said we were one of the best groups he's had for an even like this. He has done them for Porsche club for years.

Sorry I didn't reply to all the follow-ups. I was busy that week and never even checked back on the forum.

A few of us were discussing the missing access panel on the bottom of the E46s (Steve's and Dave's cars), and then the fact that some E46 just have a plastic tray. I checked Bentley, the metal tray with the access panel is on only coupes and convertibles.

I went to the races with Timmy Saturday night, had a great time, the POS Escort he was pounding on won it's class. I've never been a fan of circle-track, but those 425hp Late Models were pretty impressive. It was free fishing lure night too! Seriously, it's great family fun out there.

Thanks to all the DIYers for making this a smooth event!

The best part is that the owner/management team at ODS are in on the joke; they know that a "Free Fishing Lure" promo is sort of cheesy and funny, we chuckled every time the announcer mentioned it. But the kids absolutely loved it, you should have seen the excitement on their faces when they came to get their free lures.

The Boy Scouts were there too, all sitting together, in uniform. It's almost like stepping into a time-warp back to the 1950's when you go there.

It's great family fun, I encourage everyone to get out there and check it out.

Rob -

Nice write-up on the DIY event in the dB this month. I also liked your article on the 530xi. My wife and I are already looking at that car as a replacement for the 525iT. We just need to wait until you finish leasing it first ;)

Take advantage of having ODS in our backyards. Its days are numbered. The land is worth more for a subdivision. The DC area also used to have the Beltsville Speedway in Md and back 40 years ago the Malboro track hosted drivers like Penske, Clark, Hill etc. And if you are really old like certain club members Andrews and I believe Bolling had sports car races.
And who knows you may see the next phenom in NASCAr at ODS!

Nice to see DIY. Any thought been given to having them a week or two weeks before drivers school so students could get tech done at the session?

No input whatsoever, but you may want to contact your local NJ BMWCCA members... While you're more than welcome here, I suspect that they'd be able to direct to more effectively to local suppliers and mechanics.

You might also want to send an email to Mike Miller at Roundel - techtalk@<hidden> . He's very helpful with those ancient cars. ;)

Yeah, he will tell you to get a Honda. :)

Actually if it is the original radiator, it may just that that it is old. A knonw problem with BMW raiators is they tend to break teh plastic pieces at 110,000 miles or so. So one way to look at it is you got 150% of normal life out of the radiator.

There are all Aluminum radiators out there, but not sure if anyone makes one for a 7

David Hicks

In 1988, BMW was still making all-Al radiators. Pinecone, that doesn't make you wrong about it maybe being old. Just not because the plastic parts are breaking. :p

Rob,
I just became a member and live in Northern VA, so next time there's a DIY locally, I'm in. I wish I had known about the one in Manassas, because that's like 20 minutes from me.

A few of my friends and I have had some DIY days as well. Just had one last Saturday at FCCT in Sterling, VA, along with a Dyno Day. I'd be happy to set another one up, if enough people were interested.

I think a few members of my other car club (still German) were interested in setting up a DIY day, I'd see if I could set something up if there was enough interest. Who else would be interested?

Hello. My name is Devin Williams, Derek is my older brother. We had a copy of der Bayerische, but we had rain damage to our house and his room got totally ruin. The copy was lost in the room. I was wondering if anyone had a copy still of this issue of der Bayerische. I would like to buy it from anyone. I'm looking for 2 or 3 copys because other family members would like one. If anyone could help me out, you would be a life saver. Thanks
