Anybody going? Friday will have practice and qualifying for both the Rolex Grand-Am and the Continental Tire Challenge. Saturday the 2 1/2-hour Continental Tire race starts at 11:15. The 2 3/4-hour Rolex race starts at 3pm.
The Conti race (best series in the world IMHO) has two classes. Grand Sport class features BMW M3s of the Turner Motorsports, Bimmerworld, Fall Line, Insight (formerly RRT), and Bacardi Rum Bum teams against Mustangs, Camaros, Porsches and Subaru STIs. The Street Tuner class has BMW 328s and 128s against VW GTIs, Honda Civic Rs, Mini Coopers, Mazda RX8s, MX5s, and Speed3s.
The Rolex race also has two classes. The Daytona Prototypes are full-on race cars wth rear-mounted V8s by BMW, Ford, Chevy, and Porsche. The Chip Ganassi #01 car driven by Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas has won every race this season despite more and more restrictions to their Dinan-tuned BMW V8. Grand-Am has posted a $25,000 bounty for the team that can beat the 01 car at VIR.
The GT class has tube-frame race cars with body work resembling their production car counterparts. Camaros, Corvettes, 3-rotor Mazda RX8s, and Porsche GT3 Cups will be trying to beat the Turner Motorsports BMW M3.
If you can't make it to VIR, the Rolex race will be on Speed Channel on a delayed telecast at 5pm Saturday.
