BMW is likely to turn to continue technical development alliances to spread R&D costs beyond its own 1.4 million annual vehicle says, says the Wall Street Journal.

BMW remains the envy of the rest of the world’s automakers. But its relatively small size among those still in business presents challenges, says the Wall Street Journal, particularly the ongoing cost of developing technologies to meet new fuel economy and emissions standards. The solution, according to an Aug. 31 article by Joseph B. White, is to share some of the development costs with its rivals. That may be the price BMW, with 1.4 million annual sales to Toyota’s 10 million, has to pay to assure its independence.
