One Lap of America May 4-12

The TireRack One Lap of America is this coming week. Unlike last year when Summit Point was one of the venues, the closest track to DC/Baltimore this year is in Joliet, Illinois. This crazy event starts Saturday in South Bend Indiana and we travel to race track sin Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma, Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Wisconsin before returning to the finish in South Bend. My 8-time partner Neil Simon and I will be driving his modified 2011 BMW 1M. Also from National Capital Chapter are Robin Sparrow and Rafael Garces in Robin's E92 M3. In all there are 11 BMW entered including a new M5 for Mike Renner of the BMW Performance Center in Greer, SC.

As always Robin is raising money for ZERO - the Project to End Prostate Cancer. Robin will be maintaining a blog at www.onelapforlife.blogspot.com

Brian Hair is not competing this year. He and his wife Janeen are awaiting the birth of their daughter Senna.

I won't be a grandfather for another week or so. This event is SO much fun Everyone should do it once. And it might get in your blood. We now stand 25th overall with 7 events remaining.It's 10:14 CT and we have 219 more miles to Brainerd Minnesota where the track has the fastest right hander in the country! Yahoo.

Edit: Neil just informed me that neither of his kids are expecting.

It's over and after 5,000 miles Neil and I got back home Saturday night. Of the 72 cars that started, two supercharged E90 M3s ended up tied for 11th with 5,660 points on a NASCAR-type scoring system. The tie was broken by total accumulated time. The new F10 M5 was 14th. Robin Sparrow and Rafael Garces finished 18th with the almost stock E92 M3. Neil Simon and I were 21st in his 1M after running in the upper 30s early in the event. BMWs won three classes (Luxury Sedan with the E90 M3), Mid-Price Sedan with a Dinan 335i, and SuperSport/GT2 Small Bore with our 1M. The seven road courses included long-time favorites Road America (Wisconsin) and Hallett (Oklahoma). The three new tracks to most competitors were High Plains Raceway (east of Denver), Motorsports Park Hastings (Nebraska), and 43-year old Brainerd Internatioinal Raceway (Minnesota). All three were well liked, particularily High Plains for its elevation changes and Brainerd for its mile-long straight and long, banked turn 1 that are faster than anything at Road America.
