    LSD Rebuild

Can anyone recommend a good shop for rebuilding a limited slip diff for an E30? I'd prefer someone local, but will ship for quality (but not overpriced) work.

    Thanks,
    Brandon

FWIW, my neighbor who's a mechanic for a local BMW dealership said that it's difficult to obtain diff parts for E30s these days.

You might want to consider an aftermarket diff such as a Quiafe. It might be cheaper in the long run, and since Quaifes are gear-driven, no worries about having to get 'em rebuilt.

Quaifes are expensive. You can spend $2350 but there is a lifetime warranty and no clutch packs to rebuild.

I got both Quaifes for my VWs at around $700 apiece.

More importantly, Demon Tweeks offers BMW Quaifes at around 600 pounds sterling, so that's only around $900 USD. Don't know where you bought yours, Steven, but they can be had for cheaper than $2350.

$2350 is certainly much more than I'd like to pay. It is an e30 after all.

On a related note, how strict is the club in enforcing autocross class rules? In other words, for Prepared, the rules are guided by SCCA Street Touring rules, which specify factory LSD units only. No one would know if I had a Quaife, but I'd prefer to play by the rules.

OG Racing had my Quaife for I think 1250. For that you just get the gear set. Then it needs to be installed and setup properly with shims in the housing. I have heard of shops really f'ing the install up.

Brett (Koala) put mine together. While I may have paid more than some other shops, I trust Brett more than other shops.

And as far as cheating on autocross classes.
I like to think there is more integrity in our group.

I wholeheartedly agree. Hopefully I didn't give an oppositive impression.

I found a factory diff for dirt cheap today. I'll pick it up this Saturday and hope it's not completely shot. "Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology."
