Here's my suggestion for the next MD event:

Definitely a designated driver location. Although Steven can walk home from there.

I think we should do dogfish head brewry as was suggested at on the border... that would be a lot of fun (especially considering everyone [at least i think so] is over 21)

I'll second the vote for the Dogfish. I've been there a couple of times - for those who want to come early, the food is decent (there's a dining area on the second floor). Good burgers and the like, granted no five-star meals, but it's not the kind of place.

For those who have to much, there's an abandoned Nike missle site around the corner if you need to sleep it off.

The 18th works for me - late in the afternoon/early evening?

According to my neighbor the nike site is adjacent to the MD State DOT facility just west of the I-270 / Quince Orchard Road interchange - but enough about all that.

Just a heads-up if you're coming to Dogfish from the north you will need to exit 270 at the Quince Orchard Road exit (MD 124). If you're coming from the south on 270 you will need to exit at the Clopper Road exit (M117). I believe they have directions on their website.

If someone's up for a roadtrip the Dogfish brewery is located in Milton, Delaware - about 2-1/2 to 3 hours (depending upon traffic) away - as I recall. Its a bum of a drive - many small one-light towns in DE with LOTS of local cops (you get the picture).

I prefer the weekday evening gatherings. Weekends always seem to fill up with other things. Besides, my designated driver works just a few miles away. But perhaps some people can't make it on weekdays.

Dogfish is used to accommodating group activities. They can set aside an area for us, maybe on the second floor.

We can try to setup a weekend social event once the other programs finalize their schedules. Maybe another charity carwash. :)

Agree. Autocross takes priority over everything else!

I vote for weekend events. Attending anything during the week is a non-starter for me. Between work, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, soccer practice, etc. I just can't make a weekday event.

The other program's schedules are dictated by available locations. Once we have those sorted out we can try to schedule some weekend social events. It is often the same people who run the other programs who are running/attending the social events. If everyone is at a drivers school, autocross, concours, etc. then there won't be many people attending the social.

There seems to be alot of interest in a weekend social event (I guess in part the result of my inability to read a calendar). What about an autocross daytime event followed by a late afternoon/early evening social event. This would give people the opportunity to attend one, the other, or (ideally) both. Obviously the get together should occur relatively close-by to the Autocross. This will be the first full autocross season since I became a CCA member so the schedule and locations are new to me.

As far as participating in an autocross event, I'm in the same situation as pranu - would love to try autocross, but the issue of damaging the vehicle is of concern. Since our get together earlier this month in Rockville I've been looking into giving the autocross a go, but have been reading all kinds of horror stories regarding subframe damage to the E46 as a result of autocross driving.

Pranu -

Conquer your fear.

The first autocross that I attended, I had not intention of driving. In fact, the only BMW we owned at the time was the 5er wagon. After watching the other cars and talking to a few of the folks, I decided to sign up.

I had not idea what I was doing and it took all of my attention just to stay on the course. I probably looked pretty bad out there, but I had a blast and I managed to avoid having the slowest time of the day.

You only have to push the car as hard as you are comfortable with. Just come out and have a little fun and meet everyone.

I would imagine that the stories of subframe damage are on cars that have been modified with stiff springs and sway-bars. These mods can put additional strain on the body possibly causing damage. A stock car running on street tires will see more stress on a trip through pot-hole ridden D.C than an Autocross.

In the fall we hold an event called "Chapterfest". We try to have both a concours and an autocross at the same time and location. There is usually food there too. In the past there has also been a swapmeet but I think little has been done with that.

I've tried going out after an autocross and it doesn't work very well. We are usually out there at 7am which often means leaving our houses by 6 to setup the course then we stay out there all day. By the time an event is over most of us are wiped out. Some people have occassionally gone out for a beer or dinner after the event to a nearby location but it is more of an impromptu thing that depends on how exhausted everyone is. If it has been raining and we are all soaked, most people just want to get home.

I avoid driving into DC whenever possible because of their roads yet I have no issues autocrossing my car.

I think you should come out and watch an event or two and decide for yourself. I'm not familiar with the subframe issue on the E46. I'm sure someone who knows about it will speak up.

Considering we didn't use Rosechunk last season, it has to have been a few years back. We do go out fairly frequently after the autocrosses. Eric,

Keep in mind that Steven has been around for many years. ;)

He's referring to some events that we held at Rosecroft back in the "previous century" (about 1998). The first event was the first time anyone got use of Rosecroft (that would have been me and some friends in the NCC) and we had a dinner in the clubhouse and got to watch some harness racing. I actually got to ride in the pace truck before one event.

Here's the deal. I stopped by the place. Thursday is one of their busiest nights. There is a band that starts at 9:00. Sunday - Tuesday are their slow nights. On Thursday there is little hope to have our own section. I was hoping to have the patio section to ourselves. Monday is 1/2 price burgers not that it should really matter. No Thursday will be OK of you don't mind loud crowds. Personally, I'd rather not.

Discuss.

Does anyone have an objection to Tuesday May 16?

VicAsh Tuesday maybe. I did not stick around although one of the waitresses was all excited about a car club coming over. She worked for Lothar at one point. She doesn't like BMWs. Too much maintanence she told me. The hostess told me the same thing. But she does like the older M4s. Yes, M4. Maybe that is why she is a waitress and not working at ExcluService anymore. Pretty cool little blurb about Dogfish Head in my college's magazine:

Sam Calagione '92, meanwhile, believed that he could be the best… writer, not entrepreneur. But the founder of Dogfish Head Brewery in Rehoboth, Del., found his success selling suds, not short stories.

Dogfish Head, which has a second location in Milton, Del., produces 3,100 gallons of microbrewed beer daily, employs more than 40 people and sells its products in 18 states. (Those alums in and around the Lehigh Valley can find Dogfish Head beer at Tanczos Beverages in Bethlehem.) There are always 10 types of microbrews on tap at the Rehoboth location (which is part restaurant, part distillery and part brewery) with names like Shelter Pale Ale and Raison D’etre (a Belgian-style beer) ready to tempt customers’ palates.

Calagione says the timing was right when he started the company in 1995.

“The craft brewing industry was in its nascent period then, and it seemed like a sound, growing industry. I knew I could grow beer on my stove, and I had the confidence that I could run my own microbrewery. Still, it was fun being a 25-year-old English major going to my bank and saying that I wanted to start my own brewery.”

He got the money, moved from his New York apartment and got the business started in Rehoboth. He says the company’s total revenues in its first year were $600,000; for 2002, he estimates them to be around $3.2 million.

As a sponsor of his class’s 10-year reunion earlier this year, Calagione distributed his prized Dogfish Head beer to his former classmates. “Everyone was really complimentary and excited that we were doing well.”

Man, what the hell did I do career wise?????

I called Dogfish. We can't make a reservation for 20 for 7:00pm. They only take reservations earlier in the day. We can't reserve the outdoor patio.

I would think that Tuesday is a slow night that they'd welcome us.
So. . .
We can just meet there at 7:00 and hope for the best.

That's a tough location. I can think of that corner changing hands at least 3 times in the past several years.
